Course Overview

The Associate Certificate in Marine Engineering (ACME) and Nautical Science (ACNS) is aimed at providing individuals with sound theoretical knowledge, practical skills and competency-based knowledge derived from the STCW 1978 as amended necessary in the practice of Marine Engineering and Nautical Science at the Operational and Support levels onboard ships and relevant maritime industries.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

On completions of the programmes, the graduates should be able to:

  • Know the basics of Ship Design, Construction and Layout
  • Apply the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to assist the Officer in charge of an Engineering or Navigational Watch onboard ships as may be required
  • Assist to operate, maintain and manage merchant ships and offshore platforms as necessary
  • Have technical competence to work at support level onboard ships
  • Acquire or Develop a range of communication knowledge and skills relevant to the needs of marine engineers or nautical/deck officers

COURSE DURATION

The Associates Courses shall run for a duration of One (1) Academic (Calendar) Year consisting of Two (2) Semesters. Each Semester shall run for 15 Weeks with a break of a minimum of two (2) to maximum of four (4) Weeks in between.

MINIMUM ENTRY STANDARDS / ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

All prospective students for the Associate Courses in Marine Engineering and Nautical Studies shall possess or meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. Five (5) Credit Level Passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any other science or technical subjects obtained at not more than two (2) sittings in SSCE or its equivalent;
  2. Shall be 18 Years Old or more;
  3. Graduates of other fields of studies i.e. holders of ND/HND/BSc/B.Eng (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, etc.) in courses related to the field of Marine Engineering and Nautical Studies.

COURSE INTAKE LIMITATION

The maximum intake/admission of students into the two (2) Associate Courses shall be limited to twenty  (20) per class. This indicates a ratio of twenty students per lecturer i.e. ratio 20:1. 

 SEA SERVICE/EXPERIENCE

The students who successfully complete the Associate Course either Marine Engineering or Nautical Studies Programme will be expected to undergo Compulsory Sea Service onboard ships/vessels of various capacities for a minimum of thirty six (36) months.

For candidates who have required Sea Service of thirty six (36) months as Ratings onboard ships/vessels i.e. (experienced Ratings onboard) but lack the required academic certificate, they are required to undergo the Associate Certificate Courses in addition to their Sea-time to become eligible for a Notice of Eligibility (NOE).

Successful completion of the required Sea-Time and the Associate Courses as applicable will qualify the students to apply for a Notice of Eligibility (NOE) to become eligible to proceed for a Certificate of Competency (CoC) Preparatory Course at any of the approved Maritime Training Institutions (MTIs) and thereafter sit for the Officer of the Watch (OOW) [Engine/Deck NCV] Certificate of Competency (CoC) Examinations.
